Each of these cleaning powders has its unique qualities and uses. This post will explain the differences between these products to help you make an informed choice for your cleaning needs.
Bar Keepers Friend (aka BKF):
Most expensive. Active ingredient: oxalic acid. Oxalic acid naturally occurs in many fruits and vegetables. Non-toxic. Dissolves hard water deposits, removes rust, and eliminates patina on copper sinks. Not tested on animals (cruelty-free). Made in the USA. Slightly less abrasive than Comet. Does not contain bleach but might still discolor some surfaces if used improperly.
Choose it if: you need to tackle rust, tarnish, and mineral deposits.
Comet and Ajax:
Cheapest option, available at any store unlike Bon Ami or BKF. Contains bleach, and will stain the carpet if spilled. Contains dyes. Tested on animals (not cruelty-free). Made in China. Most abrasive particles. Non-environmentally friendly.
Choose it if: you are on a strict budget or the cleaning job specifically requires bleach.
Bon Ami:
"Greenest" ingredients. Finest particles. Contains feldspar. Costs more than Comet/Ajax but less than BKF. Contains no bleach, and will not stain surfaces. Non-acidic, will not corrode metal like BKF. Made in the USA. Not tested on animals (cruelty-free).
Choose it if: you want the safest, "greenest", non-scratch cleanser.
